What is Tunable White Lighting?

You may have come across this term when researching ideas for your home, especially in new or retrofit projects. Lighting systems are becoming a mainstay in modern homes, and for very good reason–the technology used in lighting design can make any room, hallway, or even outdoor area dramatically more functional and beautiful.

Subtle changes in color temperature can soothe or energize any living space.

How is light tunable? Isn't it just white?

‘Tunable white lighting’ refers to a lighting system that allows us to adjust the color temperature of light itself. Scientifically, color temperature is measured in Kelvins (K) and is used to describe the warmth or coolness of light. A sunset is in the lower color temperature range, around 3500K, and emits that wonderfully warm, yellowish light. The higher color temperature ranges, around 6500K, produce a cooler, bluish light, reminiscent of daylight.

Through tunable white lighting, we can dynamically control the color temperature of the light within any specified range. This means that the lighting system can provide a spectrum of light from warm to cool, allowing for far more adaptable and customizable environments than traditional lighting could ever achieve.

Where is it used?

Tunable white lighting systems can be seen in residential, commercial, and industrial settings to create unique lighting conditions that suit different activities, times of day, or preferences. The technology is frequently integrated with smart home systems where occupants can control the lighting through mobile apps, voice commands, or automatically through a programmed automation system.

Can it benefit my home?

The key advantage of tunable white lighting is in its ability to simulate the natural changes in sunlight throughout the day. This can greatly improve our circadian rhythm regulation, meaning more restful sleep and wakeful productivity. For example, cooler light in the morning can sharpen our focus, while warmer light in the evening can signal the body to wind down and prepare for sleep.

Tunable lighting systems can be achieved using different light sources, including LED (Light Emitting Diode) technology, so integrating this technology may be more approachable than you may think. It’s energy-efficient while allowing for precise control over color temperature, so wherever light is valued–in your home, in offices, and even outside–there is a way to make it perfect.
